March Newsletter 2012

Welcome

Many of our specialists are busy making last minute preparations for the forthcoming BADA Fair. If you require a complimentary invitation please don't hesitate to contact us. Those exhibiting are Lennox Cato, Amherst Antiques, John Robertson Paintings, Kaye Michie Fine Art, S & S Timms Antiques Ltd., and Shaw Edwards Antiques. All of them will be delighted to welcome you onto their stands at the fair.

Jupiter Antiques will be taking a stand along the road at Chelsea Town Hall for The Chelsea Fair. Both fairs run simultaneously, and so it is a great opportunity to visit two fairs in one day. All dates and information are listed in the Dates for your Diary section.

With spring firmly in the air you may very well be thinking of giving your home a little bit of rejuvenation! Why not let our renowned interior designers, Mrs. Monro Ltd., offer a helping hand. With their experience and flair they can transform an ordinary room into something of exquisite beauty, something you will enjoy for years to come and something to feel proud to show your friends! Visit http://www.edenbridgegalleries.com/dealers/d/mrs-monro-ltd/41474 and see what we mean. They can be reached at their London office or via The Edenbridge Galleries.

We very much look forward to welcoming another specialist to our unique collective, Michael Baggott who is an extremely knowledgeable silver dealer, joins us at the end of March. You may know him from the television series 'Flog It!' He has also written books and numerous articles for The Finial, the journal of the Silver Spoon Club of Great Britain.

You will have the opportunity to meet Michael along with all our specialists during our Spring Open Weekend on 12th and 13th May. Entitled 'The Jubilee Years', many of our specialists are organising a series of talks focused on a particular Jubilee Year. A timetable of talks will be listed in our next newsletter so as you can plan your visit to coincide with a particular interest.

Although we love to see you at the fairs, don't forget we are equally pleased to welcome you to the galleries. We are open six days a week where you can always guarantee that a very warm welcome awaits you.

Our best wishes, Lennox, Sue and all at the galleries.

Competition of the Month

Many congratulations to Art Ramirez from Datchett, who was our winner for the February competition. He guessed correctly that the artist of the wonderful painting on the tole tray was attributed to Maria Anna Angelika/Angelica Katharina Kauffman (30 October 1741 - 5 November 1807). She was a Swiss-Austrian Neoclassical painter. Kauffman (not Kauffmann) is the preferred spelling of her name; it is the form she herself used most in signing her correspondence, documents and paintings. Visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelica_Kauffman for further information on this hugely talented artist.

This month we have a real brain teaser for you! Shaw Edwards has sent this image of a very strange creature. It is made of oak and wrought iron and dates to about circa 1500. The question is as follows:-
  1. What does it represent and why?
  2. What do you think it was used for?

This has really got us all baffled, hopefully someone reading this will be able to shed some light on this mystery and win themselves a £100 gift voucher. It will be well and truly earned!

Please either telephone or email your answer to us by March 31st and once again….good luck!
