Dear reader, as mentioned in the last letter some of our specialists are in the middle of organising various events in and around the galleries. Firstly, on Sunday 8th September Dianne Brick of Amherst Antiques is hosting a Tunbridge Ware Day at the Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells. The day will be devoted to a study of veneers with reference to English Furniture and Tunbridge Ware. The day will start at 10am with a welcome coffee and a chance to view Dianne's latest acquisitions. At 11am Lennox Cato will present a talk on veneers used on furniture of the early 19th century. The day will include a buffet lunch and an afternoon talk presented by Dianne. The day will conclude with afternoon tea at 3.30pm. At a cost of £45 per head this day offers a fascinating insight into the complicated world of identifying veneers. Tickets have been going fast so if this is of interest to you please do not hesitate to book your place via the galleries.

Later on in the month Jupiter Antiques, our resident porcelain dealers, will be holding a two day selling exhibition of hundreds of pieces of fine British porcelain produced by major factories over a 200 year period. This will be in collaboration with two other porcelain dealers, Mark and Sandra Diamond and Tony Horsley Antiques. Many of you may already know these specialists and be familiar with the quality of stock they display. The event will take place on 27th and 28th September here at the galleries and will be open to all.

Lennox Cato has one more Antiques Roadshow venue to take part in this year. This will take place on Thursday 12th September at Exeter Cathedral. Please do go along if you are in the area.

This will be the first Antiques Roadshow Tilly will attend! As you can see in the photo she really enjoys car travel!!!

We would like to bring to your attention that the galleries will be CLOSED from Thursday 15th August and reopen on Monday 19th August.

More details of events are listed in our Dates for your Diary section below.

That seems to be all for now, we do hope you continue to enjoy the summer and look forward to seeing you sometime soon,

Lennox, Sue and all at the galleries

Competition of the Month
Well, last month's competition really got you all guessing! Although we thought the idea of a box for Tilly's favourite bone was very interesting (!) Shaw has chosen Mike Barlow as our winner with this most intriguing answer which we felt could be absolutely correct:

Mike suggests that it could be a container for Ambergris for travelling in a coach hence the strap fixings - extremely valuable hence the lock and the holes to allow the scent to escape.

Mike will be receiving a £100 gift voucher to spend at the galleries very shortly.

This month can you guess what this extraordinary item was used for? It measures Ht. 3.54ins. (9cm) W. 6.30ins. (16cm) lgnth. 25.59ins. (65cm). It is possibly Norwegian and is inscribed 'Anna Peter S Datterin Hallemano 1765'. Traces of the original green paint can be found on the pine board and ash wooden handle. A tricky one, but someone out there must know! Answers please by August 31st for your chance to win a £100 gift voucher. Good luck!!
