August Newsletter 2012

Welcome

Now that we have all just about recovered from Olympics fever, and what a spectacular two weeks of sporting events we have had, and still more to come! However, it is now time to turn our thoughts to our autumn programme of events. As you know there is always much going on here in the galleries and the season approaching will not disappoint.

Firstly, September 6th see's Lennox Cato heading off to Chatham Dockyards with the Antiques Roadshow. The following week on Friday September 14th he will be hosting 'Pop Up Talks' at Ightham Mote, near Sevenoaks. This is in conjunction with sculptor Guy Portelli, of 'Dragons Den' fame, who will be hosting an exhibition entitled 'Rocking the Mote'.

Lennox is also presenting a talk at Gravetye Manor near East Grinstead entitled Antiques for Investment. Tickets are still available through the hotel. Please visit their website for further information www.gravetyemanor.co.uk and go to the events page.

Another talk on the horizon for Lennox is a fund raising event at St. Marys, Chiddingstone when Lennox will be talking about his life with antiques. Guests are invited to bring one item each along for possible discussion. Dates and further information in Dates for your Diary.

October embarks with a fascinating selling exhibition provided by Dianne Brick of Amherst Antiques. Entitled Landmarks, the exhibition will include over forty examples of topographical Tunbridge Ware from the collection of Mr King, author of a 1980's publication on mosaic views.

This will be a rare opportunity for any avid Tunbridge Ware collector to view and purchase from a private collection not seen for many years. With special emphasis on views pre 1860, the exhibition will primarily concentrate on landmarks in Kent and Sussex and will include examples of Tunbridge Ware rarities such as the Calverley Hotel, Tunbridge Wells and Knole in Sevenoaks.

Dianne, who has compiled a comprehensive booklet to accompany the exhibition, will also be presenting a talk on the subject entitled 'Romantic Views on Tunbridge Ware'. This will take place on Saturday 13th and will be a ticket only event. Priced at £15 per person to include a delicious 'Afternoon Tea'. For more information please visit Dianne's website by clicking here.

We very much look forward to seeing you at one or more of these forthcoming events.

With our best wishes,
Lennox, Sue and all at the galleries.

Competition of the Month

We are pleased to say we have had yet another winner! We did receive one correct answer and several near misses. The correct answer was an 'Argyle' used for keeping gravy warm, it has a liner in which hot water was poured into which in turn kept the gravy warm. As the spout is so narrow, it would conclude that gravy was much thinner in the 18th century, unlike gravy today.

A Mr. Francis Raeymeakers guessed the correct answer even down to dating it circa 1780. You can see this Argyle by visiting http://www.lennoxcato.com/antique-furniture/old-sheffield-plated-argyle-gravy-warmer/105377

This month can you tell us what this long handled item is used for? We also want its correct name, what it is made of and approximate date. Can't make it too easy! Answers please by the end of the month via email or phone.
