STOP PRESS - IN VIEW OF JOHN MORTON LEE'S APPROACHING RETIREMENT SOME OF THE PAINTINGS ON THE WEBSITE HAVE BEEN REDUCED IN PRICE FOR A LIMITED PERIOD.
Commander John Morton Lee OBE RN (Retd)
(Known by some in the trade as ‘Gunboat’ but most people know him and his wife as ‘John and Paddy’)
On retiring from the Royal Navy in 1984 after forty one years in uniform, John decided to turn his lifelong hobby of collecting marine watercolours into a business. To some degree this was in his genes, as his grandfather, father, uncle and cousin had all been members of the British Antique Dealers’ Association, the latter three all having served as President. John, forming a business partnership with his wife, Paddy, in 1990 was elected to the BADA in 1994.
From the start, J.Morton Lee (Fine Watercolours) were based at their home in Hayling Island, Hampshire, and like many other dealers, built up their client base and reputation by exhibiting at Antique fairs up and down the country. In the early days they were seen from Edinburgh and Alnwick in the North to Brighton and Bristol in the South. They also held Spring, Summer and Christmas Exhibitions nearer home at Chichester and Emsworth. Their main and usually more successful Fairs were in Harrogate, Buxton, the NEC and in London, most notably for the past ten years at the BADA Fair in Duke of York’s Square.
Today, on the verge of celebrating his twenty-fifth year as an art dealer, John has joined many old friends as a member of the BADA collective at the Edenbridge Galleries in Kent. He and Paddy will still be exhibiting at the Petersfield Fairs and at their Annual Christmas Exhibition in Emsworth, but will be concentrating on maintaining a sensibly priced collection of fine quality watercolours at Edenbridge, with the emphasis on marine subjects. If you are contemplating a visit, we are planning to be at the Galleries at least one Saturday every month to meet old and new clients, but in our absence you can be sure of a warm welcome from Lennox and Susan Cato.
