Description / Expertise:
Victorian silver-gilt ice or ice cream spade in Elizabethan pattern of extremely good weight. The cartouche on the back of the stem is empty. The very crisp hallmarks have been stamped on the side of the back of the spade.

The Elizabethan pattern is a 19th Century pattern which has no connection with Queen Elizabeth I. The name originates from the Renaissance form of decoration which appears on the stem of all pieces made in this pattern. The pattern was first produced around 1850 and is still made to-day. The Victorians were very fond of ice and ice- related desserts. Therefore, spades such as this one would have had a dual purpose of shovelling ice as well as serving ice-cream. This is such a highly decorative piece that it could to-day have a number of very versatile uses as a serving implement. Apart from being used to serve ice in drinks and serving ice cream, this spade could easily be used to serve sweet or savoury mousse, or even pate, as well as a varied number of puddings.
