Description / Expertise:
The substantial gilded cannelee case, glazed to the sides, top and back, contains a good quality eight day movement which has its original lever escapement with compensated balance.
The dial has delicate gilded hands and numerals, set against a black background. Below this and to the top corners are depicted a variety of summer flowers, including pansies, roses, carnations, convolvulus, and forget-me-nots, in many different colours.
Pietra Dura is an old Florentine craft going back to at least the 16th century. It is rarely seen on carriage clocks. It basically consists of creating pictures by the use of a mozaic of coloured stones , especially marbles, set against a black background. No artificial colours are used.
