Description / Expertise
D175. This laterndluhr Vienna is a superb copy of Gluckstein’s fire-gilt bronze masterpiece which is illustrated on the front cover of Alt-Wiener Uhren and is part of the Sobek collection, housed in the Geymuller Schlossl, part of the Austrian State Museum.
The very well executed carved lamp on top rests on a shaped block above the architectural top of the case, the lower edges of the moulds of which have floral decoration. The hinged hood front door and sides are cross-banded in rosewood with boxwood stringing and there are very delicate applied turned columns with tiny capitals. The glazed sides of the trunk have long grain rosewood veneers with an inner boxwood band. The trunk door is of the lift-up variety with rectangular fluted ebonised columns with capitals to either side and boxwood stringing is again used to the upper and lower borders of the rosewood veneer.
The base also has a lift-up front door which is decorated with cross-grain rosewood and boxwood stringing. The glazed sides match those of the trunk. To either side are delicate turned columns. The concave rosewood veneered base terminates in a semi-circular carved and ebonised block.
The delicate movement, which would date circa 1820, has a small diameter barrel to allow for the long duration. Beat regulation is provided and the “seconds” steel rod pendulum has knife-edge suspension. Two brass cased weights are used in tandem.
The 6.5" white enamelled dial with roman numerals, has a gilded and engine turned bezel.
