Description / Expertise

This post box, probably intended for a hall table to house inward and outward mail is attributed to Henry Hollamby, who was both a wholesaler and retailer of Tunbridge Ware in Tunbridge Wells from 1845 for nearly fifty years. Over the years he perfected the technique of tessellated mosaic and was known particularly for his topographical subjects both of local views and further afield.

As he was primarily a wholesaler, Hollamby rarely labelled his work but on occasions retailer’s labels can be found. The post box has a label for F L Hausburg of Liverpool, a renowned retailer and cabinet maker in his own right. Hausburg came to England from Berlin in 1836 and became owner of a large manufacturing and retail enterprise, stocking a wide range of goods including Tunbridge Ware, bought from Henry Hollamby.

Hausburg retired from business in 1860, which gives us a useful guide to date pieces with his label. We therefore suggest that the post box, veneered in rosewood and featuring Berlin woolwork borders and a shell motif, is likely to date around 1855.
