Description / Expertise

English Oak Medieval carved corbel, circa 1420 depicting a Saint, possibly St Anthony, wearing an Eastern mitre, and holding a staff and a book. Stylistically it could be from the Northern part of the Country, in addition the extremely dark and dense timber is consistent with Oak harvested in Lancashire and Yorkshire. It is designed as a corner piece to meet the intersection of two walls and would have served as a support for the springing of a barrel roof. The back has been trimmed some considerable time ago and the remains of the original bored hole for the pin that secured it to the wall plate remains visible. There is a later strip of wood to the top of the piece.
