Description / Expertise
Oak carved panel, circa 1540-1550, probably from the Normandy Region of France. It is finely carved with a symmetrical design of a pair of stylised Seahorses to the top separated by a flower in the middle from a pair of”esoteric” creatures, posssibly Squid, below. A coffer with panels decorated with a similar style of carving is illustrated in Figure 115, page 157 of” Le Mobiler Francais du Moyen Age a la Renaissance”, by Jacqueline Boccador. It has been widened at some stage and has a three centimetre strip to each side.
