Description / Expertise
English Oak Carved Coffer, Devon, circa 1660, of good colour. The three plank top is joined to the carcase of the chest by simple ring hinges, one of which has been replaced. The two panel front is very well carved with strong and deeply incised chisel work depicting eternity symbols profusely decorated with foliate design. The top rail has running lunettes again decorated with typical foliate design. The central muntin is brought out with an intersecting ovoid figure with palmate decoration. The two stiles are decorated with a repeated leaf from top to bottom. The stiles have the initials M & P carved into them at the top, however it looks as though these have been added later. There are minor restorations to the bottom and top.
