Description / Expertise
D195. A large and rare Bishop And Stonier 12 piece Jug & Basin Double Set, which bears the registration number for the year 1893.
That such a large and beautifully decorated set should have survived intact and virtually undamaged for well over a 100 years must be a minor miracle, particularly bearing in mind its relative fragility, the usage to which it would have been put and the total number of all the components. The only defects we have detected, all quite minor, are a chip to the bottom edge of one of the jugs, a crack in one basin, a hairline crack in the handle of one chamber pot and a very faint hairline crack to the handle of one tooth-brush stand.
The very comprehensive set comprises two ewers, two basins, two chamber-pots, two soap dishes with liners and lids, two toothbrush stands with drain covers, one sponge dish and cover and one slops pail with cover and cane handle. All are most attractively decorated with a bright design of peacocks with Art Nouveau floral detail surrounds. All the pieces are marked to the underside with the logo and “Oriental Ivory”and most have the embossed registration number.
All the pieces are bright in colour, the basins inevitably showing a little wear to the pattern inside. What makes this set so special and rare is the very large number of pieces and the fact that it includes two tooth-brush stands, which are so hard to find, even on their own and here we have two. Bishop and Stonier is believed to be the only manufacturer to use this design.
£3,500.
