Description / Expertise
English Oak Corbel of secular form, circa 1480. It has been carved from a single large section of trunk and has a wonderful "silver" Oak coloured surface. The top has a double ringed capitol below which is the gaping head of a frog-like creature of great presence. The quality of the punching to the roof of the mouth and the shaping of its tongue is outstanding. The representation of the rest of the face is carved with great skill with the bulbous eyes and the inverted ears being particularly striking. It almost reminds one of the depictions of weird and wonderful creatures in the marginalia of Illuminated Manuscripts and may well have been influenced from such a source.
