Description / Expertise

Elm Panel Back armchair, circa 1750 of outstanding colour. A truly wonderful example of the “Country” genre of furniture. From the front, the boxed construction has two horizontally set panels above the seat. In addition, from the back view, the lower section below the seat has two vertically set panels beneath it. The frieze below the seat has an attractive cut out shaped design on all three sides with ogee shaping simulating spandrels This design is then mimicked by related shaping to the undersides of the stretchers. The seat has probably been replaced at some time, but from the natural patination, it is estimated that this was some 150 to 200 years ago.
