Description / Expertise
Elizabethan Oak Boarded Coffer, this probably should be called a cofferette, with its delightful petite proportions. It is a rare coffer of its type, having good untouched surface, with the outer left hand side board still in adzed condition, as is the inside of the right hand board. The front has a delightful “zig zag” cut out design, and the back board has a deliberately curved bottom edge. In addition, the cut outs to the side are both cusped, consistent with the date of this piece. There are shallow scratch gauge mouldings on each side of the lid. Originally this coffer was only pegged, but later 17th C nails have been subsequently used to stabilise it. The hinges are later.
