Description / Expertise
An English Oak and Cypress wood panel back armchair, possibly Lake District, circa 1620. It has a dog toothed cresting rail above a lozenge carved back panel and fluted lower rail. It would appear that the back panel and rails have been inverted, probably at the end of the 17th Century. The back is flanked by pendant scrolled arms above a boarded seat, on baluster turned legs joined by stretchers. (There are minor repairs, and one stretcher has been replaced). A chair with similar turnings can be seen in Chinnery, figure 4:169, page 487. This chair was formerly owned by the singer, Elaine Paige
