Description / Expertise
English Oak carved Boss, circa 1420 – 1450, depicting a Monk holding a shield. This is an excellent example of the genre with the wide open collar of the habit, and the typical Monk's headware. Good surface quality and the remains of the original hand made fixing bolt is partially concealed at the top leading edge of the shield. It would originally have been painted, and there are some traces of the original polychrome in the interstices
