Description / Expertise
German carved figure of a female Saint, circa 1400, possibly Elisabeth of Hungary given the Crown and the long tresses of hair. The quality of the carving is exquisite, with very fine expressive quality in the face and posture, and in the fall of the creases in her garments. There is a significant amount of original blue and red polychrome decoration, which has been subsequently over-painted in the 16th Century. There is a loss at the base which possibly held the attribute of a food basket. The right arm also appears to have been replaced.
