Description / Expertise
English Oak Ceiling Boss, circa 1450. This circular Boss is of a good natural honey colour, and depicts a flower head with the stamens surrounded by delineated petals with simple chiselled ornamentation and a grooved cross joining the various segments up.
Provenance
This boss has an interesting provenance having been in the collection of Sir Harold Peto, famous as an architect and landscape Gardener who lived at Iford Manor in Bradford on Avon. Peto was a friend of Percy Mcquoid. Subsequently it was in the collection of Victor Chinnery. So this humble item provides an indirect link between two very important names in furniture history!
