Description / Expertise

D141 It is most unusual to find carriage clocks with porcelain panels in the “Arts & Crafts“ style and those used here are particularly attractive. The chapter ring is laid against a blue sky with swags of flowers above it and further flowers surrounding each of the black arabic numerals. To the centre of the chapter ring is a bird flying below 12 o’clock and to one side a wooden birdcage with two birds outside it.

Below the chapter ring is depicted a village scene with a church set alongside a river, a bridge and a boat. Both side panels show a young boy sitting on a wall, one in country garb with sun-flowers below him, so beloved of the Arts & Crafts movement, whilst the other one is a finely dressed city lad with roses inn his hands and below him.

The gong striking and repeating movement, with good lever escapement, bears the inscription Patent Surety Poller within an oval whilst another contains the initials G.L. (Lamaille). It is numbered 2185, as is the velvet lined leather travelling box, which still has its front slide, glass and travelling handle.

Ht with/ without handle 7.6" (17.8 cms.) / 6" (15.2") £4,500.
