Description / Expertise
An English Elm six plank coffer front circa 1500 to 1525 decorated with two deeply incised rectangular flower patterns on either side of a central section which formerly held a lock and plate, now only the back plate remains. This central division is intricately decorated with vertical denticulated panels abutting barbers poles edged with a running notched fork motif. The edges of the flower patterns are framed by vertical chevron decoration. There is a small “fill-it” to the right hand side, and the back has been strengthened with hessian tape for conservation purposes.
There is a one inch strip of replaced wood applied down the left hand side.
